Dear Vincent Massey families,

Looking ahead to our final week of classes, here are a few important reminders for our families.

Locker cleanouts will be completed on Friday, June 19 for Grade 9s; Tuesday, June 23 for Grade 8s; and Thursday, June 25 for Grade 7s. Lockers are to be left open with the lock on the locker. While students will have access to their lockers during the day, items left in lockers overnight after those dates (after Monday for Grade 9s) will be discarded. Missing locks will be charged to student's CBE accounts.

On Wednesday, June 24, we will have special events for all students:

·         Grade 7's are reminded that Healthy Hunger orders for the lunch at Edworthy close this evening and that they need to dress to be outdoors for the day.

·         Grade 8's are reminded that Calaway forms are past due and to bring appropriate clothing and footwear for that day. Any student who has a Calaway Park Pass, please remember to bring it.

·         Grade 9's are reminded to attend the correct ceremony for their homeroom (see below), except for band students who are performing at both. Some students have asked about dress code. While many choose "business casual" in our very warm gym, there is no set expectation and all are welcome. Please remember that we are limited (by fire code) to two guests per family.

Last Friday was our Track and Field competition. We had 37 podium finishes, including gold medal performances from Boudi K, Clara S, and Finley L on the track along with Avery O, Colton S, and Burton R on the field. Our junior relay team of Crosby M, Adegoke A, Rory C, and Adam A also grabbed first place. Congratulations to all the athletes!

We have completed the teacher component of our staffing process for next year. As previously shared, Ms. Laurendeau will be moving to become the Assistant Principal of Wilma Hansen School, as we return to a more traditional single AP structure. I am beyond grateful for Jen's contributions to our school over the last two years, particularly in the areas of literacy and EAL (English as an additional language) learning. Ms. Borrelli has accepted a position at the new Evanston Heights Middle School – she will be very much missed but this is a wonderful professional opportunity for her. Ms. Esau is heading off to the mountains for new teaching horizons. We are also celebrating the retirements of Ms. Holstein, Ms. Klotz, and Mr. Seibel over the coming days, while looking forward to welcoming them back as substitutes.

The following teachers will be joining our full-time staff next year:

·         Alex Diakowski is an experienced humanities teacher who joins us from William D Pratt Middle School. Her instructional expertise and passion for student well-being will be great additions to our Grade 7 Humanities team.

·         Chelsea Doyle has been filling in for various temporary contracts for much of the year with impressive flexibility and deep care for students. She will be continuing in Grade 7 Humanities.

·         Lindsay Gunn was a regular substitute teacher (and former student!) at Massey. She took some time to travel and teach high school, but now returns to our learning community in a full-time Grade 7 Math/Science role.

·         Easton Nugent was recently dropped into a temporary role in our Grade 8/9 Math/Science program fresh out of his teaching degree. He quickly impressed us with his positive energy and sound teaching instincts, so we're pleased to have him in our Grade 7 Math/Science team this fall.

·         Brendan Prosser returns to Massey, joining our Grade 8/9 Math team. He was missed by many this year (not least by his D&D club members!), so students and staff are excited to welcome him back.

·         Renee Thomas did her student teaching with Mr. Seibel, then filled a temporary contract with us. After a year at a CBE high school, she's looking forward to returning to middle school at Massey in our Grade 7 Humanities team.
