Weekly Update

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We continue to have much to celebrate and much to look forward to!

Grade 8 students had a wonderful educational time exploring Mobile Escape.  Students were highly engaged, showing great group dynamics, problem solving skills and logic thinking, while getting hands on with the many hidden simple machines found in the rooms.  We thank all families for their support in making this on-site field trip a success and look forward to many more successful projects with Mobile Escape.

Art Doodle Down drawing battles are happening every Wednesday at lunch during the month of May in the Art room. This is open to all three grades. Prizes are awarded to the best drawing and there are opportunities to win prizes for participating.

Next Monday, May 13, Grade 9's will be writing their English Language Arts Part A (Written) Provincial Achievement Test.  Ensuring that this runs smoothly will involve some changes to our bell schedule during the day.  It is a "B" Day but we will run periods in the order 4,5,6,1,2,3, which best supports coverage for our Grade 9 classes.  You may notice some irregularities in attendance on PowerSchool during the day. More importantly, we will have a later lunch from 1:08 to 1:50.  Students who need to eat earlier in the day (like their Principal!) should bring snacks for morning break or to eat in class.

Please note the following additional upcoming dates and events:

  • Tuesday, May 14 and Wednesday May 15 – Grade 7 Badminton Divisionals
  • Wednesday, May 15 – Grade 7 Gauss Math Contest for students who signed up
  • Thursday, May 16 – Spirit Day – wear NEON – Grade 7 Orange; Grade 8 Green; and Grade 9 Pink
  • Thursday, May 16 – Final Band Concert – 6:30pm in South Gym.  All are welcome!
  • Friday, May 17 – Non-instructional Day – there is no school for students. All staff will be working on year-end planning and reporting, some staff will attending PD sessions at other schools
  • Monday, May 20 – Victoria Day holiday, school is closed
  • Tuesday, May 21 – Grade  8 Outdoor Leadership Sunshine Coast Trip departs
  • Tuesday, May 21, Thursday, May 23, and Tuesday, May 28 – Grade 9 classes to Rothney Astrophysical Observatory

Further to that last item, we are still in urgent need of volunteers for the Rothney trip. Volunteers are needed to ensure adequate supervision and support student safety and learning. If you've not been to Rothney before, this is also a great opportunity to visit this fascinating scientific site, which is beautifully set in the foothills just south-west of Calgary. Thank you to those who have already volunteered! Please email Allison Clark (alclark@cbe.ab.ca) if you are able to help out on May 21, May 23 or May 28.

Please note that there is one spot left on our November trip to the Bamfield Marine Science Centre.  Please contact Ms. Lima (lalima@cbe.ab.ca) for more information if you would like your next year Grade 8 or Grade 9 student to be part of this learning opportunity.

All the best,

David Pugh
