Dear Vincent Massey families,
May has arrived at Massey with beautiful sunny weather and a buzz of outdoor activity.
Yesterday, Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Anita Crowshoe was working with several classes building a Blackfoot tipi. In my observation, this involved not only deep learning about Blackfoot culture but also quite a bit of math! Several Indigenous Grade 9 students were able to lead this teaching throughout the day – a fantastic opportunity for them to develop their leadership with their peers.
Earlier this morning, I saw off our Grade 8 Outdoor Leadership students as they shouldered their backpacks and headed to Edworthy Park for a test of their equipment, meal planning, and overall readiness ahead of the West Coast trip in late May.
Many teaching teams have also been taking time to get outside, including a variety of different phys-ed activities, construction class heading to the local community centre to work on their planters, and classes meeting in our inner courtyard.
There are several important updates and reminders this week, starting with Grade 9 farewell on June 23. As previously shared, we need to run a morning and afternoon ceremony with an even split of the homerooms. With a remarkable 5 sets of twins and 2 sets of triplets, splitting the classes proved challenging but we have settled on homerooms 1, 3, 4, 5 and 9 in the morning at 10am and homerooms 2, 6, 7, 8, and 10 in the afternoon at 12:30pm. We will have a photo booth (thanks to support from the Vincent Massey Parent Association) after both ceremonies. We also hope to have food trucks at lunchtime, with both groups welcome to mingle. Lastly, this is a final reminder for baby pictures, which should be emailed to Mr. Morawski or given to homeroom teachers no later than Monday, May 5.
Earlier this week, Grade 7 and 8 students completed their complementary course selections for next year. Students entered their top four picks into PowerSchool and we will try our best to fill these requests. Please note the course selections in PowerSchool are not a ranked list. Students also provided a written record of their choices, as well as two alternates. We will work to fulfill these requests, based on available course spaces.
