Dear Vincent Massey families,
Halloween is always an exciting time at school, and students who attended our grade costume contests had fun celebrating this morning. We hope that they all have a safe and enjoyable October 31 tomorrow!
Although we are only just entering November, High School transitions are already starting for our Grade 9's. Tours will run November through January, depending on the designated high school. We will take students to their designated high school for the school-led tours. Watch for off-site activity forms which will be sent home, starting with Ernest Manning designated students next week. Community open houses at each school are open to all, and those dates can be found on each school's website, along with other information. Designations are based on the address in PowerSchool, which can be updated through myCBE with valid proof of address. Other transfer considerations are not reviewed or approved by Vincent Massey staff; please review the information on high school transfers on the CBE website.
On November 10, we will have our Remembrance Day assemblies in periods 2 and 3. Students in cadets, scouts, or similar organizations are invited to wear their uniforms to school on that day. We would also like to include any members of the extended Vincent Massey family in our photo presentation at the assembly. If you have a family member who is serving or has served in the military and would like them included, please send the following to us:
· A digital photograph of the family member who served / is serving.
· The name of the branch and specific division of the military in which they served.
· Their rank and/or role in the military
· The years and/or conflicts in which they served
· Their relation to a current Massey student and that student's first and last name.
There are limited number of spaces at this assemblies available for parents/guardians of students who are actively participating in these events.
We have seen and spoken with an increasing number of late students in the hallways over the last couple of weeks. While we've already put some measures in place to ensure on time arrival in class, please pay attention to the attendance notifications and discuss lates and absences with your child. Both of these indicators represent missed instructional time, and while a few lates happen from time-to-time, a pattern should be concerning.
School council will hold their second meeting of the year this coming Wednesday evening, November 4, at 6:30pm. Ms. Sue Ness, our math learning leader, will be attending to talk a little bit about math and numeracy learning at Vincent Massey. All parents and guardians are welcome!
Another topic of discussion will be our fundraising, including the upcoming casino. A few volunteers are still needed to fill critical roles. Several families have two or more members helping out. With about 500 families in our community, I'm hopeful that the remaining spots can be quickly filled – a CBE volunteer clearance is NOT needed, as this is not a school event with students. Lastly, I wanted to share information about Parenting in the Online World webinars for the 2026/2027 school year. These sessions are offered by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and will provide insights into concerning trends seen through operations of Cybertip.ca — Canada’s tipline to report the online sexual exploitation of children — and offer considerations and resources for talking with children and youth about online safety. The first webinar will be taking place on Wednesday, November 18th at 6:00pm Central Daylight Time. You can sign up at this link: https://protectkidsonline.ca/webinar. Please note this is not a Vincent Massey or CBE sponsored event. However, this work is aligned with our Digital Citizenship Plan, which can be found here on our school website.
